Installing Bathroom Sinks

One of the easiest ways to spruce up a bathroom and make the room look like it had a major overhaul is to replace the bathroom sink and fixtures. These small changes can make a huge difference in how a bathroom looks and feels. So, if you have decided to install a new sink, you might be looking for some pointers to get you started.

First, you need to decide what type of sink you want to install. There are five different types you can pick from. The first is the most common and that is the vanity sink. Vanity bathroom sinks are those that are already part of a cabinet or set of cabinets. This is either an undermount bathroom sink or it is drop mounted into the cabinet. These are great for larger bathrooms where you have more space and more storage is needed.

Another type of bathroom sink is the pedestal sink. These bathroom sinks are best for a small bathroom that does not have a lot of room and does not need storage space. Powder rooms or small half baths are the most common place you will see a pedestal sink. Similar to the pedestal sink, but slightly different is the console sink. Console sinks are ones that are attached to the wall in the back and have two legs in the front to support the sink. The space under the sink is open and there is no cabinet. However, there is often room enough for a basket to store some extra toilet paper or bathroom supplies.

Your other two choices are vessel sinks or wall mounted sinks. Vessel sinks are ones where a basin of some kind sits on top of a counter rather than having the sink be part of the counter or mounted under it. A wall mounted sink is of course mounted directly to the wall with no counter or cabinet. These two varieties of bathroom sinks are similar in that the hardware such as the faucet and hot and cold controls need to be mounted to the wall rather than through the sink or counter top.

Replacing your sink is easy if you are replacing one with a second one that is a similar style because then you do not have to change any of the bathroom plumbing. You just need to be sure to turn off the water before you start any work on either the old sink or the new one. If you need to change the placement of the plumbing then it is best to consult a plumber.
